Most individual or employee benefits plans contain some coverage for speech-language pathology services. Every plan is different, so it’s wise to check your policy to find out how much coverage you have and how it is structured.
Some therapy approaches require that a parent be trained in order to help facilitate their child’s home practice. When this is the case, the session may be eligible to be billed or claimed under the parent's name.
Many plans also have a Personal Health Spending account which can be put toward speech and language therapy.
Families receiving a “Childhood Budget” from the Ontario Autism Program are eligible to use their funding to purchase speech and language services provided by a registered Speech-Language Pathologist. For more information about the program, please visit the Ontario Autism Program website or contact Autism Ontario for support in understanding how to access funding for your child on the Autism spectrum.
Fees for speech-language pathology services may be claimed as a Medical Expense on your taxes. You may also be eligible for a Disability Tax Credit. Please check with the Canada Revenue Agency for a complete list of eligible medical expenses as well as disability tax credit information.
